In Fine+ condition, this hammered coin was produced at the Tower of London, the home of The Royal Mint between 1558 and 1603. A hammered coin required two dies, and the die featuring the obverse design had a spike in the base that could be placed in a block of wood. A fresh blank was placed on this, and the second die tool was hammered on top to impart both designs to the coin.
