1716 George I Guinea, Fourth Head, ex Ellerby Area Hoard

In a remarkable archaeological discovery, a hoard of over 260 gold coins dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries was unearthed in 2019 in the East Yorkshire village of Ellerby. This significant find was made by a couple during renovations of their 18th-century home. The hoard, a time capsule of royal wealth, spans nearly a century of English history. The earliest coins trace back to the reign of King James I, while the latest belong to the era of King Charles II. Most of the coins are guineas, with some half guineas, and were discovered carefully preserved in a leather purse beneath the property's concrete floor.
